As we move towards data sharing, we will be in need of 'names normalization' services in which we report data on taxa using the same name (with the samne spelling). iPlant has been collaborating with the Missouri Botanical Garden and the NCEAS BIEN working group to develop a Taxonomic Name Resolution Service (TNRS) for plants. TROPICOS appears to be the reference source for the 'correct' names. In preparation for the public release of the first version of TNRS, iPlant is inviting a select group of scientists to use the service and provide feedback. Please try the TNRS, put it through its paces, try to break it. Let them know how TNRS performs on your lists of names and if the output and documentation are clear. Please report problems and provide feedback to Brad Boyle (bboyle@email.arizona.edu). For testing purposes, the TNRS is available at: http://ohmsford.iplantc.org/tnrs-standalone/ At this time, 'plant' seems to refer to the multicellular taxa.
